 Coach McVey

Fairmont, Fairmont East, Kettering

Larry started coaching at Fairmont High School as an assistant football coach in 1960. At the same time he was head basketball and baseball coach through 1963 at Van Buren Junior High.

In 1964-1969 he coached 8th grade football at Indian Riffle Junior High School.  In 1969 he started as an assistant wrestling coach at Fairmont East. From 1970-1983 Larry served as an assistant football coach and head wrestling coach.

When the schools joined together, he again served as an assistant football coach and head wrestling coach at Kettering Fairmont High school from 1983 – 1992. He served as an assistant 9th grade football coach for Kettering Junior High from 1993-1996. Larry’s record as wrestling head coach was 92-90-1.

Roy Leonord ('73) - Coach McVey - Mark Koogler ('73)

Larry was the Kettering Oakwood Times Coach of the Year, Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Association Coach of the Year and was inducted into the GMVWCA Hall of Fame in 1992.

Larry, as a wrestling coach with the 2nd most wins in school history, had 5 OHSAA State Place Winners, 6 District Champions, 18 Sectional Champions and 22 WOL Champions. He served as President of the GMVWA 3 times and started the first junior high wrestling program in the area in 1968. As a football assistant he coached defensive back.

Larry’s most memorable moments were coaching his son, David to a 2nd place finish in the Division I OHSAA State finals in 1980 and coaching Chris Gelvin to the Division I OHSAA State championship in 1984.

Larry still substitutes in Kettering City Schools. He is a public speaker and is very involved in the Optimists and Toastmasters. He is especially proud of being “Grandpa”. He is very active in grandpa activities. Who can ever forget those famous words: “Positive Mental Attitude”?

We are all very proud of Coach McVey and wish him the best! We were honored to have had him participate in our 35 year Reunion in the Holiday at Home Parade. See photo of the parade below. Maybe we can convince him to join us for our 40th?
